Any time I say “I don’t like rap music” whoever I’m talking to immediately says “well, you must be racist.” Does this happen to any body else? Should I be worried? Is this something that happens to people of other races?
Of course, not liking rap because I’m racist rests on three very shaky assumptions:
1) I decide what music to listen to based soley on the performers’ skin color
2) African Americans ONLY perform rap music.
3) People of any other race NEVER perform rap.
It’s kind of silly when you think about it. I’m a fan of many black artists; just not rappers. I enjoy Chuck Berry, Bo Diddly, Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, John Coltrane, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Prince, Death, Bad Brains, Living Color and God Forbid.
In fact, my favorite band is now fronted by an African-American gentleman.
Of course I’m also not a fan of Eminem, Vanilla Ice, Macklemore, Machine Gun Kelly, Pall Wall, Snow or Marky Mark.
But I don’t mean for this to be an argument against my being racist. I am racist, just watch me picking sides for basketball. I’m just not racist with regards to what music I listen to.
